KSTAR Line Interactive UPS in South Africa

A UPS in South Africa is not a data centre accessory, it is the thing that keeps your router, gate motor controller or alarm panel alive through loadshedding. KSTAR makes line interactive units across the sizes that matter for a home or small office. NeonSales carries 4 KSTAR products, from R845 for a 600VA up to R2,728 for a 2000VA.

What KSTAR products does NeonSales stock?

Sizing a UPS

Size Typically covers Best suited to
600VA Router, ONT, a small switch Keeping internet alive through an outage
1000VA Desktop PC and monitor, or networking plus an NVR A workstation or a modest CCTV setup
2000VA Several devices, or one larger load Small office, or where runtime matters more than device count

VA is not watts

This trips people up constantly. A 1000VA unit does not deliver 1000 watts. Real output is typically around 60 percent of the VA figure, so plan on roughly 600W from a 1000VA unit. Add up the actual wattage of what you intend to run, then size up from there rather than matching numbers.

What line interactive means

Line interactive units regulate incoming voltage and switch to battery when supply fails, with a brief transfer time that connected equipment does not notice. That is the right technology for routers, computers and alarm panels. It is not the same as an online double conversion UPS, which delivers zero transfer time and costs considerably more, and is only necessary for equipment intolerant of any interruption.

Common questions

How long will it run? Runtime depends on load. The lighter the connected devices, the longer it lasts. A router alone on a 600VA unit will run considerably longer than a PC on the same unit.

What is the USB port for? It lets a connected computer monitor the UPS and shut down safely before the battery is exhausted. On a workstation that is worth having.

Can I run a fridge or a kettle? No. UPS units are for electronics. Motors and heating elements draw far more than these are built to supply.

Do the batteries need replacing? Yes, eventually. UPS batteries degrade with cycling, and frequent loadshedding cycles them hard. Expect a shorter service life than the specification suggests.
