A PCP airgun, short for “pre-charged pneumatic”, runs on compressed air instead of a spring. On paper, that might sound like a minor detail, but when you actually fire one, the difference is obvious. The recoil’s almost nothing, the shot feels… well, softer somehow, and you tend to see the pellet hit closer to where you thought it would. Once you’ve tried it, you start to understand why plenty of folks, from first-timers to shooters who’ve been at it for decades, keep one in their collection. From quick-fire 10-metre practice to stretching shots out for long-range precision, a good PCP rifle will keep your aim on point.

PCP rifles get their name from “pre-charged pneumatic,” meaning you fill them with air first, then they’re good to go when you shoot.

Yes, you can leave a PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) air rifle charged for quite a while without problems — as long as you look after it properly. PCP rifles are built to hold pressure in their reservoirs far longer than spring-piston or CO₂ guns. That said, a little care goes a long way in keeping yours shooting sweetly for years.
Pressure: Stay within the manufacturer’s range and stop a touch short of the max.
Storage: Store it in a dry place. Heat and cold slowly harden or damage seals and hurt performance.
Checks: Peek at the gauge now and then. If the pressure drifts down between uses, you’re likely dealing with a slow leak that needs attention.
Safety: If the PCP’s charged, treat it like it’s live. Handle it with care, lock it away when you’re done, and don’t let it take a knock.
If you follow these steps, leaving your PCP air rifle charged shouldn’t cause trouble — but the key is regular checks and safe handling.
PCP rifles are known for their outstanding accuracy. Using high-pressure air, they deliver a steady power output with very little change in pellet speed. That consistency makes for tighter shot grouping and better precision — whether you’re competing, hunting, controlling pests, or just enjoying some long-range target shooting.
A quality air rifle can last for decades with proper maintenance. Many shooters report using the same air rifle for 20-30 years or more.
You can mount a standard scope on a PCP without worrying about springer-style recoil. Do check that it focuses at airgun distances though — an AO or side-focus scope that dials to 10–25 m is ideal. Also match the mounts to your rail (11 mm dovetail or Picatinny).
Dry firing PCP rifles will usually be completely safe, as there isn't a piston to worry about. You’re simply releasing a short spurt of air/CO2 to force the pellet up the barrel. This is very unlikely to cause any damage, and any good manufacturer of PCP or CO2 air rifles that would be damaged through dry firing would make it very clear in the owner’s manual.
For beginners, go .177. Its light, fast pellets give a flatter trajectory and cleaner sight pictures. With spring-powered rifles, the gentler recoil helps you focus on trigger control and follow-through.
Air tanks under 300cc can be filled by a small compressor easily, while tanks between 300cc and 500cc will cause a small compressor to struggle, and may need to pause filling to cool down so it doesn't overheat. For tanks over 500cc, a large compressor is better.
You get minimal recoil and a softer report from a PCP, which makes the shot cycle calm and predictable. Mainly due to the absence of mechanical parts moving at high speed.
