Choosing cable ties

For anything outdoors, use UV stabilised ties. Standard nylon becomes brittle in South African sun and fails after a season or two, which is how a neatly cabled installation turns into hanging cable.

Tek screws for steel

Tek screws have a drill point that cuts its own hole in sheet metal, so no pilot hole is needed. That makes them the standard fixing for mounting brackets, boxes and rails onto steel structures, gates and roofing, which is most of what a security install fixes to. The 5.5x65mm size here suits heavier sections.

Threadlocker matters more than it looks

Anything bolted to a moving gate or a vibrating structure will work loose eventually, and a camera bracket that has drifted is a camera pointing at nothing. Medium intensity threadlocker holds a fastener without making it impossible to remove later, which is the right grade for equipment you may need to service.

Common questions

Gas or electric soldering iron? Gas irons work anywhere with no power, which suits site work and cable joins up a pole. A 12V iron is useful where you have a vehicle supply. On a bench, mains is easier.

115mm or 230mm angle grinder? The 115mm is lighter and more controllable for cutting rail, bar and small sections. The 230mm handles heavier cutting at the cost of weight and a much greater need for care.

What is a measuring wheel for? Measuring cable runs and fence lines over distance, far faster and more accurate than pacing it out.

Do I need the full tool kit? The 17 piece electronic engineer set covers precision work on boards and terminations. For general installation, individual tools and a decent screwdriver set go further.
