ZKTeco Biometric Readers and Access Control in South Africa

Reader or controller, and why you may need both

A small installation runs standalone readers and nothing else. Once you have several doors and staff turnover, a controller becomes worth it, because adding or removing a person happens once centrally rather than at every door.

Fingerprint, face or RFID

Fingerprint is the cheapest biometric and works well indoors, though wet, dirty or worn fingers cause failures, which is why sites with manual labour often move away from it. Face recognition, as on the SpeedFace units, is contactless and faster in a queue. RFID cards are the most reliable and the least secure, since a card can be handed over. Multi-biometric readers combine them, which lets you require a card plus a face for high security areas and accept either elsewhere.

What UHF is for

The U2000E reads at up to 12 metres, which is a different application entirely: vehicles. A tag on a windscreen is read as the car approaches, so the gate opens without the driver stopping or opening a window. That is why it costs several times a door reader.

Common questions

Do I need the IP65 version? Yes, if the reader is mounted outdoors or in a wash-down area. Indoor readers fail quickly when exposed to weather.

How many users do these hold? Capacity varies by model. Check the specific listing against your headcount, and allow room for growth.

Can readers work with an existing controller? Within the ZKTeco platform, generally yes. Mixing brands is more difficult and depends on protocol support.

Does the controller need its own power supply? Yes, and the 12V 3A PSU with enclosure is stocked for exactly that. Locks draw significant current, so size the supply to the whole installation.
