Where a 12V 7Ah battery goes

It is the default size for an alarm panel, and the same battery turns up in gate motors, electric fence energizers and small power supplies. If your alarm has been beeping a low battery fault, or your gate has stopped working during loadshedding while the mains light is on, this is almost certainly the part.

How long they last

Sealed lead acid batteries degrade with cycling, and loadshedding cycles them hard. In current conditions expect noticeably shorter life than the specification suggests, often around eighteen months rather than several years. A battery that no longer carries a panel through an outage has reached the end of its useful life even if it still shows voltage.

Common questions

Can I replace it myself? On most alarm panels and gate motors, yes. Note the terminal polarity before disconnecting, and dispose of the old battery properly rather than in household waste.

Should I upgrade to lithium? LiFePO4 costs several times more and lasts considerably longer under daily cycling. On a system that loses power most days, the maths often favours lithium. Note that chargers are chemistry-specific, so check your panel supports it.

Why does my new battery not last long? Usually the charging circuit rather than the battery. A panel that overcharges or undercharges will destroy a replacement as quickly as it did the original.
