What a takedown case actually does

A takedown case is built for a rifle that separates into two sections, typically an upper and lower or a barrel and action. At 27 inches it is far less conspicuous than a full-length rifle case, and it fits in a vehicle without announcing what is inside. It only works if your rifle actually breaks down, so check that before ordering.

Sling case or tactical case?

Sling cases include a shoulder strap arrangement built for carrying over distance, which matters if you walk from the vehicle to a stand rather than parking alongside. Tactical cases prioritise padding, internal organisation and external webbing for attaching pouches. Neither is better in the abstract, though the sling versions cost more at the same length, which reflects the carrying hardware.

Common questions

Measure before ordering. Take the rifle from muzzle to buttstock with the moderator fitted and the stock at your working length, then add a few centimetres for internal padding. A 42 inch case will not take a 42 inch rifle.

Does colour affect price? Slightly, and inconsistently. The 52 inch is R2,036 in tan and olive drab, R2,163 in black. Choose on preference and check the listing price rather than assuming.

Soft case or hard case? Soft cases are lighter, cheaper and adequate for a drive to the range. For flying, rough roads or anything stacked on top, a hard case is the sensible choice.

What goes in a range bag? Ammunition, magazines, eye and ear protection, cleaning gear and tools. The Pro Series range bag is organised for that rather than for carrying a rifle.
