Nebo Mycro 550 Headlamp, Blue: four control features that decide what happens when you press the button
A headlamp with seven modes and one button lives or dies on how that button behaves. This one has four separate features governing it, and between them they answer the questions that actually matter in use: what comes on first, what comes on next, what you get when you pick the lamp up tomorrow, and what happens to it while it sits in your bag.
Direct-to-Low
The lamp starts at 25 lumens rather than at full output. On a handheld torch that is a nicety. On something worn on the head it is close to essential, because the beam points wherever you look, which includes at the person you are speaking to, at a white wall two feet away, and at your own hands. Coming on at 200 or 550 lumens in any of those situations produces glare instead of visibility and wipes out the dark adaptation of everyone facing you.
Twenty five lumens covers a great deal of what a headlamp gets switched on for, and stepping up from there is one press away.
Direct-to-Red
Red preserves night vision, which takes twenty minutes to build and a fraction of a second of white light to undo. Direct-to-Red goes straight to the 25 lumen red flood with no white output firing on the way.
This counts for more on a head mounted lamp than anywhere else, for the same reason as above. A lamp that cycles up through white to reach red blinds everyone in front of you every time you select it, which in a shared tent, a hide, a night shift or anywhere people are keeping their eyes adjusted makes the red mode worse than not having one at all.
Mode Memory Recall
The lamp comes back on whichever mode it was using when you switched it off. Across seven modes that is the difference between something you configure once and something you renavigate every single time. Anyone using Spot Medium for a nightly walk gets Spot Medium, every night, without touching anything else.
PowerSave Lockout
The least glamorous of the four and arguably the most valuable. Lockout disables the lamp completely, so nothing in a bag or a pocket can press the button and wake it. Small headlamps are notorious for exactly that failure: they switch themselves on inside a rucksack, run down over a few hours, and are dead when you reach for them.
On a lamp carrying only 200 mAh that failure would be fast and total. Being able to lock it out is what makes the small battery a reasonable design decision rather than a liability.
What the four add up to
Taken one at a time none of them is remarkable. Taken together they describe a lamp that behaves predictably, which on a device with seven modes and a single control is the whole game. It comes on gently, reaches red without collateral damage, remembers what you were doing last, and stays off until you decide otherwise. That is a shorter list of complaints than most multi mode headlamps generate.
Where the button sits
All of this runs from one side mounted control, which is the right number for something worn where you cannot see it. Two buttons on a headlamp means locating the correct one by feel with cold or gloved fingers and getting it wrong in the dark often enough to matter. One button with a documented order removes the guesswork.
Seven modes on the Mycro 550
The spot handles distance, running Turbo at 550 lumens over 75 metres for 30 seconds, High at 200 lumens over 50 metres for 30 minutes, Medium at 100 lumens over 37 metres for an hour, and Low at 25 lumens over 18 metres for 140 minutes.
The COB flood handles close work, at 200 lumens over 24 metres for 25 minutes or 50 lumens over 11 metres for 50 minutes, with the 25 lumen red flood alongside them.
Charging fills in the rest of the picture: roughly half an hour over USB-C into a 200 mAh lithium polymer cell, which is what makes runtimes of this length workable for intermittent use rather than frustrating.
The blue finish
Mechanically and electrically the three colours are one lamp, so the decision is preference and identification. Blue stands out most clearly of the three against a work surface or the inside of a bag, and where a household or a crew runs more than one, different colours are the simplest way of tracking whose is whose and which has been charged.
Wearing and build
The unit mounts on an adjustable reflective headband or on the supplied cap clip, and tilts across six locking detents through a 130 degree arc rather than on friction, so the beam holds wherever it is set. The shell pairs impact resistant ABS with aircraft grade aluminium and carries an IPX4 rating, covering rain and splashes but not immersion. Strap included, the lamp comes to 85 grams, in a body 73 millimetres long by 31 wide and 26 deep. A USB-C cable, the headband and the cap clip all ship with it.
