Nebo Mycro 550 Headlamp, Black: 550 lumens from a 200 mAh battery that refills in 30 minutes
One number on this specification sheet explains all the others, and it is not the 550 lumens. It is the 200 mAh cell, rated at 0.74 watt hours. That is a very small battery, and every runtime figure on the lamp follows from it. So does the 30 minute charge time, and so does the 85 gram weight. Understanding that trade is the difference between being pleased with this lamp and being disappointed by it.
What the Mycro 550 battery is really for
Conventional headlamp design treats capacity as the thing to maximise. Bigger cell, longer runtime, and the weight ends up wherever it ends up. Nebo has gone the other way. The battery is deliberately tiny, the lamp is correspondingly light, and the answer to endurance is not more capacity but a charge cycle short enough to fit inside a tea break.
Thirty minutes from empty to full, from any USB-C source, is fast enough to change how you think about charging altogether. You do not plan around it or leave it plugged in overnight. You connect it while you eat lunch, or while the kettle boils, or in the vehicle on the way to the next job, and it is full again before you have finished whatever else you were doing.
The consequence is that this is a lamp for people who are near power. Trades, workshops, vehicle work, inspections, DIY, dog walking, camping within reach of a vehicle. It is not an expedition lamp and does not pretend to be one.
Being honest about the runtimes
Spot High gives 200 lumens for 30 minutes. Spot Medium gives 100 lumens for an hour. Spot Low gives 25 lumens for 140 minutes, a little over two hours and the longest single figure the lamp produces. On the flood side, High runs 200 lumens for 25 minutes and Low runs 50 lumens for 50.
Those are short numbers by headlamp standards and there is no sense dressing them up. What makes them workable is the charge time. A lamp that runs half an hour and refills in half an hour has a duty cycle of roughly one to one, which for intermittent work is entirely reasonable. A lamp that ran half an hour and took five hours to refill would be useless.
If your work means being away from power for a full night, this is the wrong lamp and the larger models in the range are the right ones. If it means an hour here and an hour there with a socket or a power bank never far away, the weight you save is worth more than the capacity you gave up.
Turbo, and why it is 30 seconds
The headline 550 lumens is quoted at 30 seconds, reaching 75 metres. That is not a limitation being hidden. It is the only honest way to specify it. Five hundred and fifty lumens out of a 200 mAh cell in an 85 gram housing is a burst both electrically and thermally, and any manufacturer quoting minutes at that output would be either overstating the light or understating the damage.
Treat Turbo as a way of identifying something at 75 metres for a few seconds, and Spot High at 200 lumens as the working top setting. On that basis the lamp behaves exactly as written.
Headlamp or cap light
The unit runs on an adjustable headband or clips to the brim of a cap using the supplied clip, both of which are in the box rather than sold separately. The cap option suits anyone already wearing a hat, anyone who finds a band uncomfortable across a long day, and anyone who wants the light sitting lower than eye level so it throws fewer shadows over close work.
The headband is reflective, which deserves its own mention. When the lamp is off, or aimed away from an approaching vehicle, you remain visible from the side. On a road, a verge or a site, that is a safety feature rather than a styling one.
The black finish
All three colours of this lamp are mechanically and electrically identical, so the choice comes down to what you would rather own and how easily you want to find it. Black is the neutral option. It stays looking clean longer than a pale colour does on a work site, and it draws no attention sitting on a hat or a helmet.
Controls and build
Seven lighting modes cover spot, flood and red. Direct-to-Low and Direct-to-Red reach the low white and the red setting without cycling through full output first. Mode Memory Recall returns the lamp to whatever you last used. PowerSave Lockout disables it entirely so it cannot switch itself on inside a bag and arrive flat.
Tilt moves through 130 degrees across six locking positions. Construction is impact resistant ABS with aircraft grade aluminium, rated IPX4, which covers rain and splashes rather than immersion. The whole assembly weighs 85 grams including the strap and measures 73 by 31 by 26 millimetres. A USB-C cable, the headband and the cap clip are supplied.
