The SL50 carries two 21700 cells totalling 9000 mAh, and the runtimes that come out of that are what separate it from everything around it. Eight hours on high, reaching 800 metres the whole time. Nearly nineteen hours on medium at 565 metres. Forty hours on low, still throwing 246 metres.
Most spotlights are bought for reach and quietly limited by endurance, giving you an hour or two at full output before the useful part of the evening ends. Eight hours at 450 lumens and 800 metres covers an entire night without a recharge, and it removes the habit of rationing a light you paid for the reach of.
The cost is weight. At 860 grams this is more than twice the SL25R, and that is the honest trade: twin cells mean twin cell mass. If the work involves sustained scanning through the night, it is worth carrying. If the light is for occasional short use, the smaller model is easier to live with.
High runs 450 lumens to 800 metres for 8 hours. Medium gives 250 lumens to 565 metres for 18 hours and 50 minutes. Low provides 50 lumens to 246 metres for 40 hours. Note that reach barely collapses as you step down, which is the mark of a properly focused optic: even the lowest setting is still a long range tool.
A front facing trigger button fires the light and a mode select dial sits at the back, so both controls fall under the hand already holding it. Smart Power Control balances output against remaining charge, which on a pack this size is what keeps the published runtimes honest rather than optimistic.
Anodised aircraft grade aluminium in satin black with cool grey sleeves, an ergonomic rubberised grip, IP67 dust and water protection and a 1 metre impact rating. A magnetic base allows hands free positioning on steel. Charging is USB-C. The unit measures 71.1 by 60.9 by 170.4 millimetres and weighs 860 grams with both cells fitted.
