The SL25R is shaped like a tool rather than a tube. It is a grip with a trigger button on the front face and a mode select dial at the back, which means the hand holding it is already on both controls. You set the dial with your thumb and fire with your index finger, without looking and without changing grip.
A cylindrical torch has to be gripped and pointed, and any control on it competes with your hold. A pistol grip points naturally at whatever your arm is aimed at and can be held out for long periods without your wrist working against it. For scanning, for holding a light on something while somebody else works, and for use from a vehicle window, that is a different experience from a barrel torch of the same output.
The rubberised grip adds to it, giving a positive hold with wet or gloved hands where an anodised tube would be slippery.
The spot delivers 500 lumens to 400 metres for 2 hours, which is the long range function and the reason the unit exists. A white COB panel gives 300 lumens over 25 metres for 3.5 hours, covering everything close in where the spot would simply glare. A red COB provides 30 lumens to 12 metres for 6 hours, preserving dark adaptation for map reading, close work or moving about without announcing yourself.
Between them the spotlight replaces a torch and a work light rather than being a bright beam with nothing else to offer.
A magnetic base holds it to any steel surface for hands free work, which matters more on a shaped body than on a torch you could stand on end. Smart Power Control manages output against remaining charge. The housing is anodised aircraft grade aluminium in satin black with cool grey sleeves, rated IP67 for dust and water with a 1 metre impact rating.
Power is a 2000 mAh 18650 lithium ion cell at 3.7 V, charged over USB-C. The unit weighs 365 grams with the battery and measures 93 by 60 by 180 millimetres.
