Nebo Davinci 800L: starts on low, and charges your phone
Two features on the Davinci 800L do more for daily use than the 800 lumen headline does. It starts on low rather than high, and it has a USB-A port that turns it into a power bank. Both are small decisions that change how the torch behaves in your hand and in your bag.
Direct-to-Low startup
Most torches come on at full output. That is the right default for a search light and the wrong one for everything else. Switching on 800 lumens in a dark room, a tent, a vehicle interior or two feet from a wall gives you a wall of glare and a ruined night vision, and you then have to cycle up through the modes to get back down to something usable.
Direct-to-Low means the torch starts at 100 lumens. That covers most of what a torch is switched on for, and full output is a step away when you want it rather than something you have to escape from.
The power bank
A USB-A output lets the 2000 mAh cell charge a phone or anything else that takes USB. It is not a large power bank and is not sold as one, but the case for it is that the torch is already in your bag. In a vehicle, on a hike, during an outage, having a partial phone charge available from something you were carrying anyway is worth more than the capacity figure suggests.
Davinci 800L output and zoom
High runs 800 lumens to 128 metres for 2 hours. Medium gives 400 lumens to 92 metres for 5 hours. Low provides 100 lumens to 49 metres for 20 hours. Strobe matches full output. The 3x adjustable zoom moves the beam between a flood and a spot with a twist of the head.
Twenty hours on low is the figure that makes this a practical everyday torch. It means the charge lasts through a week of ordinary use rather than needing attention after every outing.
Smart Power Control
SPC manages the relationship between output and remaining charge, so the torch holds its stated brightness rather than dimming steadily from the moment you switch it on. It also means the published runtimes are figures you can plan against instead of best case numbers.
The tail button
Putting the power button at the tail rather than on the side changes how the torch is held. A tail switch is worked with the thumb of the hand already gripping the torch, in a natural closed fist, which is steadier than reaching a finger around to a side button and shifting your grip to do it. It also means the torch can be operated while the other hand is holding something, which is most of the time.
Zoom in practice
The 3x adjustable zoom is a moderate range rather than an extreme one, and that suits a torch used mostly at close and medium distance. Twisted in, the flood covers a room, an engine bay or a work surface evenly. Twisted out, the spot reaches the full 128 metres. Neither extreme is dramatic, and for everyday use that consistency is worth more than a wider range you would rarely visit the ends of.
Build and handling
Aircraft grade aluminium, rated IP67 for both water and dust, weighing 244 grams at 160 millimetres long and 38 across. Power is a 2000 mAh 18650 lithium ion cell charged over USB-C. The power button sits at the tail, so the torch can be operated with the same hand that holds it without changing grip. A USB-A to USB-C cable and a detachable lanyard are supplied.
