Two details separate the National Geographic 8X42 from the entry level pairs it sits alongside, and both are about what happens to light inside the housing. The prisms are BaK-4 glass and the optics are fully multi coated, which together mean brighter edges, more faithful colour and higher contrast rather than the washed out grey that cheaper coatings produce in bright conditions.
The eye cups twist up and down, so the pair works properly with or without glasses. Wearers of spectacles wind them down to sit closer, everyone else winds them up, and both get the full field of view instead of a dark ring around the edge.
Forty two millimetre objectives at 8x magnification is the classic all round combination, bright enough for early morning and dusk while staying steady handheld. The body is waterproof, and objective caps are included to keep the front lenses protected between uses and to open and close quickly when something appears.
