The specification that gets overlooked on a pair of binoculars is how close they will focus, and on the National Geographic 8X40 that figure is roughly 15 feet, or about 4.5 metres. Most general purpose binoculars give up well before that, which is why butterflies, garden birds and anything else nearby stays a blur.
Long eye relief is the other comfort feature here. It sets how far your eye can sit from the eyepiece and still see the full image, which decides whether spectacle wearers get a usable view and whether an hour of watching leaves you with a headache.
The objective lenses are 40 millimetres across with full coating to cut internal reflection and lift contrast, paired with 8x magnification that stays steady in the hand. The porro prism body measures 190 by 70 by 178 millimetres, is rubber armoured against knocks and is water resistant.
