Ledlenser TAC7R Tactical Flashlight: 3200 lumens and a Mode Select Ring that decides what the switch does before you need it
A tactical torch gets operated in conditions where you are not looking at it. The Ledlenser TAC7R tactical flashlight answers that with a Mode Select Ring behind the head, which sets what the tail switch will produce before anything starts happening. Turn it to the job you are on, and from that point the switch does one thing predictably: no cycling, no counting presses, nothing to get wrong in the dark.
Configuring the torch before the situation
The ring selects between Mission, Flash and RGB, plus a Transport Lock position. Set for a search and the switch gives you white light at the level you chose. Set for RGB and it gives you a colour without ever passing through full white on the way there. Set to Transport Lock and the torch is inert in a bag.
This is a different philosophy from a torch that cycles through modes on repeated presses. Cycling is fine when you have time and attention to spare. A ring you can find and turn by feel is what works when you have neither, and it means the light will not surprise you with 3200 lumens at the moment you wanted 100.
Three colours, three jobs
Dedicated red, green and blue LEDs sit alongside the white emitter. Red keeps night adaptation intact and stays inconspicuous, which counts on any task where being seen is itself a factor. Green is the standard choice for observing animals at close range, which is why it has become common in hunting and wildlife work. Blue assists with detecting liquids and traces against a surface, a specialist job that plain white light does badly.
Because these are separate LEDs rather than filters fitted over the main emitter, switching to one is instant and there is nothing to carry, fit or lose.

Check runs 100 lumens to 20 metres for around 30 hours, the setting for map reading, paperwork and anything at arm's length. Search gives 550 lumens to 235 metres for about 6 hours. TAC Mid provides 650 lumens to 180 metres, also around 6 hours. TAC High steps up to 1250 lumens and 245 metres for roughly 2.5 hours. TAC Boost delivers 3200 lumens and the full 370 metres in short bursts.
The spread from 100 to 3200 lumens is the real point. One torch covers reading a serial number off a plate and identifying something across a field, with Multi Lens Technology supplying flood, spot or a combined tactical beam to suit whichever end you are working at.
Strobe and Backup Mode
A strobe function is available for signalling and for disorienting at close quarters. Backup Mode is the quieter feature and probably the more useful one, holding roughly an hour of runtime in reserve once the main charge is spent. The torch warns you and keeps working instead of simply stopping.
Power
A 21700 Li-ion cell of around 4600 mAh drives it, charging over USB-C in roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. That is a larger cell than the TAC6R carries, which is where the extra output and the RGB channels come from, and it accounts for most of the size and weight difference between the two.
Grip and construction
The body is hard anodised aluminium alloy with diamond knurling, which holds in a wet or gloved hand far better than a smooth tube does. It measures 156 millimetres with a 35 millimetre head and a 29 millimetre tube, and weighs 220 grams with the battery. Protection is IP68, dust tight and submersible, with 2 metre drop resistance and an operating range from minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius. The white LED runs 6000 to 7500 K at CRI 70, flicker free, with Temperature Control protecting both output and battery life.
