Ledlenser TAC6R Tactical Flashlight: 2000 lumens at 158 grams, and it runs on CR123s when the charge is gone
Every rechargeable torch shares one failure mode. The battery goes flat somewhere with no power, and a capable light becomes a metal tube. This Ledlenser TAC6R tactical flashlight is built with a way out of that. Alongside its rechargeable 18650 cell it accepts two CR123 primary batteries, and that single decision is most of what separates a duty light from an expensive one.
Dual Power Source, and why it matters
CR123 cells hold their charge for roughly a decade on a shelf, tolerate cold far better than a lithium ion pack, and are sold anywhere that stocks camera or optics accessories. A pair taped inside a kit bag costs almost nothing and weighs almost nothing, and it gives the torch a second life that starts the moment the first one ends. No charger, no mains, no waiting.
Day to day you charge the 18650 over USB-C, which takes about 3 hours. The CR123s are insurance, and insurance is largely what a light is for on a callout.
158 grams
With the battery fitted the whole torch weighs 158 grams and measures 139 millimetres with a 35 millimetre head. That is small enough and light enough to live in a pocket, on a belt or in a pouch permanently, rather than being picked up on the days you expect to need it. Torches you have to decide to bring are torches you leave behind, and the ones that actually get used are the ones already on you.
Ledlenser TAC6R tactical flashlight beam modes
Multi Lens Technology provides three beam shapes: a flood for close work, a spot for distance, and a combined tactical beam giving both at once, a bright centre with usable light spread around it. In practice the combined beam is the one that stays selected, because most situations call for seeing something specific without losing track of everything surrounding it.
The mode set runs TAC Boost at 2000 lumens reaching up to 370 metres, then TAC High, TAC Mid, Search, Check and Strobe. Runtime stretches to around 15 hours on the lowest setting, and Backup Mode holds a reserve once the cell is nearly spent.
Two of those modes get overlooked. Check is the low output setting for anything at arm's length, where full power would simply bounce back off a reflective surface and blind you. Search sits in the middle for scanning a space without emptying the cell. A tactical torch spends far more of its working life in those two than it ever does at 2000 lumens.
The end cap switch
Operation comes from a tactical switch on the tail. It works with gloves on and supports momentary use, meaning light for exactly as long as you hold it down and darkness the instant you release. That is the right control for a torch held alongside something else in the other hand, and it is why the switch sits where it does rather than on the side of the head. A mechanical Transportation Lock disables it completely for storage.
Build
The housing is hard anodised aluminium alloy made with 75 percent recycled material, rated IP68 for dust and submersion, drop tested to 2 metres and specified from minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius. The emitter is a high power white LED at 6000 to 7500 K with CRI 70, flicker free, with a Temperature Control system managing output under sustained use. A pouch and an adjustable hand strap are supplied with it.
