Ledlenser P9R Core LEP Flashlight: 400 lumens that reach 1300 metres
Those two numbers look wrong together. Four hundred lumens is a modest output, roughly what a mid setting produces on an ordinary torch, and 1300 metres is further than almost any handheld light reaches at any output at all. This Ledlenser P9R Core LEP flashlight does both because its main beam is not an LED. It uses Laser Excited Phosphor, and the difference between the two is why lumens are the wrong number to judge this torch by.
Lumens measure the wrong thing here
Lumens count the total light a source produces in every direction at once. They say nothing about where that light ends up. A 3000 lumen flood torch puts out an enormous quantity of light across a wide angle and sends none of it very far, because the output is spread thin the moment it leaves the head. Beam distance depends on intensity at the centre of the beam, not on total volume, and intensity is a question of how tightly the source can be focused.
What Laser Excited Phosphor does differently
An LED emits from a relatively large surface, and no reflector or lens can focus a large source into a genuinely tight beam. LEP works the other way round. A laser diode is aimed at a small phosphor target, and that target, a fraction of the size of an LED die, becomes the light source. Something that small can be collimated into a narrow column that holds its shape over distance. The result is 400 lumens arriving as a tight disc a kilometre away instead of dissipating at two hundred metres.
The output is white and flicker free at a cool 6000 to 8000 K, so what comes back to you at distance is usable colour rather than a tinted wash.

Search and rescue teams sweeping a valley or a shoreline. Security covering a perimeter, a yard or a farm boundary. Anyone checking stock and fence lines after dark, or trying to identify something across water. In all of these the question is not whether you can see your feet, it is whether you can tell what is standing at the far treeline. Signalling works on the same principle, because a beam that stays coherent is visible from far further away than a bright spread of light.
Boost delivers around 400 lumens and up to 1300 metres. Power runs 250 lumens to roughly 1000 metres for about 4 hours, and Low Power gives 75 lumens to 550 metres for around 10 hours. Even the lowest setting outreaches most torches running flat out.
The other two lights
A narrow beam is useless at arm's length, which is why a separate white flood and a red mode sit alongside it. The flood turns the torch back into an ordinary usable light for reading a map, working on a gate or walking a path without a bright disc bouncing back at you. The red preserves dark adaptation, which matters more here than on most torches, because the entire purpose of the tool is seeing at distance and that depends on eyes that are properly adjusted. Up to 110 hours of runtime is available on the lowest setting.
Battery and charging
A single 21700 Li-ion cell rated 4800 mAh supplies the power, charged through the Magnetic Charge System in about 4.5 hours. The magnetic connection means there is no charging port to seal, which is part of how the torch holds an IP68 rating rather than a lesser one. The cell is a replaceable standard size rather than sealed into the body, so a spare can travel with you and swap in without tools.
Build and contents
Hard anodised aluminium alloy, IP68 dust tight and waterproof, drop tested to 2 metres and rated from minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius. It measures 176 millimetres with a 41 millimetre head and a 27 millimetre tube, and weighs 269 grams with the battery fitted. A Temperature Control System manages heat under sustained use and a Transportation Lock prevents accidental activation in transit. It ships with the battery, the magnetic charging cable, a pouch and a hand strap.
