Two lights in one housing, doing two completely different jobs. The main emitter on the LEDLenser P7R Work UV puts out 1200 lumens of high fidelity white light with a beam reaching 240 metres. On the side of the body sits a 365 nm ultraviolet light, and that second output is why this particular model ends up in the hands of people who diagnose problems for a living.
Ultraviolet at 365 nm causes many substances to fluoresce, showing up clearly against surroundings that look uniform under white light. Air conditioning and refrigeration technicians use it with UV dye to trace refrigerant leaks. Motor trade workshops use it to find coolant and oil leaks the same way. Pest controllers use it to locate rodent urine trails. Cleaning and hygiene inspectors use it to check whether a surface is actually clean. Currency, documents and security markings are checked with it. Outdoors, it is how people find scorpions after dark.
The wavelength matters. 365 nm sits deeper into the ultraviolet than the cheap violet lights that dominate the low end of the market, so it produces far less visible light of its own. The result is much higher contrast, because you are seeing the fluorescence rather than a purple glow sitting on top of it.
The white output is rated CRI 90 with a colour temperature of 3700 to 4400 K. That is close to natural daylight in how it renders colour, and it is the reason the word Work sits in the model name. Wire insulation reads as the right colour. Fluid on a driveway can be identified by its shade. Corrosion, damp and staining appear as they are rather than shifted towards blue. For anyone making judgements based on what they see, that is worth more than extra lumens.
Rubber covers on the head and end cap absorb impact and add grip in oily hands, and a lens shield protects the front element from knocks and dirt. The drop rating is 3 metres and the sealing is IP68, the top of the ingress protection scale, so washdown, rain and a dropped torch in a puddle are all non events. The torch is 170 mm long, 45 mm at the head and 219 grams.
The Magnetic Charge System uses a robust charging station that can be mounted in a vehicle or added to the LEDLenser five station charging panel. For a mobile technician that is the detail that makes the difference: the torch charges in the van between calls and lives in a fixed home rather than rolling around in a footwell. A full charge takes 270 minutes and the maximum runtime is quoted at 60 hours on the lowest setting.
Multi-Core Optics and the Advanced Focus System shape the beam from a broad even flood for close work to a tight spot for distance, without the harsh central hot spot a simple reflector produces. Flex Sealing Technology handles the sealing, and an emergency light function is included for situations where being seen matters more than seeing.
Refrigeration and air conditioning technicians, motor mechanics, pest control operators, hygiene inspectors, security staff and anyone who needs to find what is not visible under ordinary light. If none of that applies, the standard P7R gives you the same platform without the UV emitter. If any of it does, this is a diagnostic instrument that happens to also be an excellent torch.
