LEDLenser P7R Flashlight
The P7 is the model that made LEDLenser a default answer in South African hardware and outdoor shops, and the P7R is the rechargeable version of that idea. It is worth being clear about what it is: not a spotlight and not a keyring light, but the size of torch that lives in a bakkie door pocket, a toolbox or a bedside drawer and gets used several times a week without ceremony. The maximum output is 2000 lumens with a maximum beam distance of 320 metres, from a body 159 millimetres long, 27 millimetres across the tube and 35 millimetres across the head, weighing 197 grams. Those numbers are the whole argument. Two thousand lumens was flagship territory not many years ago and it now arrives in something that fits a jacket pocket and a standard torch holster. Three hundred and twenty metres covers the length of most properties, a full paddock, or the far bank of a river, which is the realistic upper limit of what a handheld torch is asked to do.
Four levels, and 80 hours at the bottom
Boost gives the full 2000 lumens and 320 metres in short bursts. Power runs 1200 lumens and 240 metres for 2.5 hours. Mid power gives 450 lumens and 150 metres for 5.5 hours. Low power drops to 25 lumens and 35 metres and runs for 80 hours. That low setting is the one worth understanding. Twenty five lumens sounds like nothing until you use it in a tent, a loadshedding blackout or a night check on animals, where it is enough to move around confidently without destroying your night vision or waking anyone. Eighty hours means a week of evenings on a single charge, and it is the reason this torch is useful in a power cut rather than merely bright.
Charging in three hours over USB-C
Charging is USB-C and a full charge takes 180 minutes. Three hours is a meaningful improvement over the overnight charge times of larger lights, because it means the torch can go from flat to full inside a working afternoon, or top up from a vehicle on the drive out. USB-C also means no dedicated cradle, no proprietary cable and no scramble when the cable stays behind at home. The rechargeable design is the sustainable answer as well: no disposable cells, no corroded contacts from a set left in for two years, and a running cost measured in cents.

The P7R carries an IP68 rating, so it is fully dust tight and rated for continuous immersion rather than a light splash. The drop test height is 2 metres, the body is aluminium alloy and the working temperature range runs from -20 to 40 degrees Celsius. That combination covers a torch dropped off a bakkie roof onto gravel, left out in a thunderstorm, or used at altitude on a winter morning. It is described as element proof for a reason, and for a light that spends its life in a toolbox that matters more than any output figure.
Beam quality and the details you notice later
Colour temperature runs between 6000 and 7500 Kelvin with a CRI of 70, giving a cool, clean white that holds contrast at distance. The output is flicker free, which is why it does not tire the eyes over a long task and why it behaves properly on camera. Intuitive control keeps mode selection predictable so you land on the level you meant rather than cycling through boost by accident, and the transportation lock disables the light in transit so it cannot switch itself on in a bag and arrive flat.
Where the P7R fits
If you want maximum distance above everything else, the P21R is the bigger sibling and it is not close. If you want one rechargeable torch that is bright enough for genuine outdoor use, small enough to carry without thinking about it, sealed against real weather and charged from the same cable as your phone, this is the size and specification most people should buy. It is a general purpose torch executed properly rather than a specialist tool, and that is exactly why it keeps selling.
Lumens and metres measure different things
It is worth separating the two headline figures, because they are not interchangeable. Lumens describe total light produced. Beam distance describes how far the optic can throw a usable amount of it. A wide floodlight and a tight thrower can share a lumen rating and behave nothing alike, which is why 2000 lumens and 320 metres should be read together rather than one at a time. The P7R sits deliberately in the middle of that trade: enough spread to light a work area properly, enough throw to identify something at the end of a driveway or across a paddock.
