Ledlenser P7 Flashlight: 400 metres of beam from four AAA batteries
Six hundred and fifty lumens reaching four hundred metres is an unusual pairing. Plenty of torches produce considerably more light and throw it nowhere near as far. The Ledlenser P7 flashlight gets that reach from its optics rather than from raw output, and it runs on four AAA cells, which means it works with no charging cable, no dock and no thought about when it was last plugged in.
Where the 400 metres comes from
Beam distance is a function of how tightly light is concentrated, not how much of it there is. The Advanced Focus System uses a lens rather than a plain reflector, and pushing the head forward collimates the output into a narrow column that holds its shape at range. Pull it back and the same 650 lumens becomes a broad even flood for close work. Nothing is thrown away in either direction, which is the whole purpose of the system.

Four AAA alkaline cells come in the box, and the torch also accepts AAA NiMH rechargeables. That second option is worth taking if the light sees regular use, because it gives you rechargeable economics without tying the torch to a proprietary cell or a dock. Anyone already running NiMH cells for other equipment can feed this from the same charger they already own.
If instead the torch lives in a vehicle or a cupboard for months between uses, alkalines are the better choice, and replacements are on sale everywhere.
Three levels and 30 hours
Power produces 650 lumens for around an hour. Mid drops to 300 lumens for about 3 hours. Low runs 40 lumens for up to 30 hours. That last figure covers a long weekend of intermittent use without carrying spares, and 40 lumens is ample for moving around a camp, a house or a yard after dark.
No charging infrastructure
There is a specific case for a torch with no battery to charge. Vehicles, boats, holiday houses, emergency kits and anything else left unattended for long stretches all suffer the same problem with rechargeable lights, which is that the charge quietly disappears while nobody is watching. Cells sitting in a drawer do not do that to anything like the same degree.
Grip and handling
The body is ribbed along its length, which sounds like styling and is not. A smooth aluminium tube becomes awkward to hold with wet or cold hands, and the ribbing gives your fingers something to locate against without adding bulk. The torch weighs roughly 175 grams with cells fitted, and everything is controlled from a single end cap switch under the thumb. An adjustable hand strap is supplied.
What the reach is actually for
Four hundred metres is a long way, and it is worth being clear about when that matters. Checking stock or a fence line across a paddock. Identifying movement at the far edge of a property. Following a path across open ground, or working out what sits at the end of a long service tunnel. For anything at conversational distance it is the flood setting you want instead, and the same torch provides that by pulling the head back in. The value lies in owning both without carrying two lights.
Build and rating
Aluminium housing made from 75 percent recycled material, impact resistant construction, and a 1 metre drop rating. Protection is IP54, covering dust and splashes rather than immersion, so rain and general site conditions are fine but dropping it into a stream is not. It functions between minus 20 and plus 40 degrees Celsius.
