Ledlenser P6R Flashlight: 1200 lumens with 65 hours of runtime on low
Most torches are bought for a particular job. The Ledlenser P6R flashlight is the one you buy without a particular job in mind, which is a harder brief to satisfy. It has to be bright enough to be genuinely useful, small enough to keep somewhere sensible, and it has to still work in six months when the power goes out with no notice.
Sixty five hours
The low setting produces 25 lumens and runs for around 65 hours. That is close to three full days of continuous light from one charge, and it is the specification that makes this a credible emergency torch rather than merely a good general one. During an extended outage, 25 lumens is enough to move around a house, find things and read by, and 65 hours means you are not rationing it by the second evening.
Further up the ladder, Boost gives 1200 lumens to 320 metres in short bursts, Power holds 700 lumens to 240 metres for about 2.5 hours, and Mid Power runs 300 lumens to 160 metres for roughly 7.5 hours.
Beam
Multi-Core Optics produce an even high intensity beam without the dark centre or ragged edge cheaper reflectors leave behind. The Advanced Focus System slides between a wide flood for a room and a tight spot for the far end of a property, which covers most of what a household or maintenance torch is ever asked to do.
Ledlenser P6R flashlight power
A single replaceable 18650 Li-ion cell of 3000 mAh charges over USB-C in about 5 hours. Replaceability counts for more on a torch kept for emergencies than on one in daily use, because a cell that has sat unused for years will eventually need swapping and the alternative is buying a whole new torch. Battery and charge indicators plus a low battery warning tell you where it stands before you come to depend on it.
One button
All four modes plus the Transportation Lock run from a single control, which is the correct choice for a torch that might be picked up by somebody else in the dark during an outage. There is nothing to explain and nothing to get wrong.
Size
It weighs 165 grams with the cell and measures 150 millimetres, extending to roughly 157 when focused, with a 35 millimetre head. That fits a glovebox, a kitchen drawer, a toolbox or the lid pocket of a rucksack, which is rather the point. A torch that only fits in one place only helps you in one place.
The Boost question
Boost produces 1200 lumens but only in short bursts, and it is worth understanding why rather than treating it as the real output. Sustaining that level would heat a torch this size faster than the body can shed it, so the Temperature Control System steps the output down to protect the electronics and the cell. Boost exists for the moment you need to identify something at 300 metres, not for the hour spent walking there.
Protection
The aluminium housing uses 75 percent recycled material and carries an IP68 rating for dust and submersion with a 2 metre drop specification. It works from minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius. Output is flicker free, a Temperature Control System prevents overheating, and a Transportation Lock stops accidental activation in storage.
