Ninety nine grams is the number that decides this one. That is what the Ledlenser P5R flashlight weighs with its battery fitted, less than a set of car keys, and it is the difference between a torch you carry every day and one you carry when you remember to. A light sitting in a drawer at home is worth nothing at the moment you actually need it.
Weight is the reason most people give up carrying a torch. It pulls a pocket out of shape, it makes itself known on a belt, and after a week of not needing it the thing gets left behind. At 99 grams there is nothing to notice, so it stays on you, and 750 lumens is available at all times instead of only on the days you correctly predicted needing it.
The proportions follow the same reasoning. The body is slim enough to sit alongside a phone and a wallet without competing for the space.
Boost reaches 750 lumens and up to 280 metres. Power runs about an hour at full working brightness, and Low Power at 25 lumens stretches to roughly 20 hours. Four modes are available in total: Boost, Power, Mid Power and Low Power. The Advanced Focus System twists between a wide flood and a focused spot, so the beam suits a dark stairwell and an open field equally.
It ships with a rechargeable 14500 Li-ion cell of 920 mAh, charging over USB-C in about 3 hours. It will also run from a single AA alkaline or NiMH cell. That matters more on a torch designed to be carried constantly than on one kept at a desk, because the occasions when you have been carrying it for weeks are precisely the occasions when it might be flat, and a AA from any shop resolves that in under a minute.
Light torches usually give something up, and the honest question is what. Here it is not the output, which matches considerably heavier torches in the class, and it is not the sealing, which is full IP68. It is runtime and reach. A 920 mAh cell cannot hold what a 21700 holds, so an hour at Power is what you get rather than two and a half, and 280 metres falls short of what a larger head would manage. For a torch meant to be on you at all times rather than deployed for a task, that is the right trade to make.
A single button controls everything, with a transportation lock to stop it waking up in a pocket. Battery status indicators report what is left, and the output is flicker free. An adjustable wrist strap comes with it.
The head twists to move the beam between flood and spot, and it does so continuously rather than in steps, so any intermediate setting the job calls for can be held indefinitely.
The low weight costs nothing in protection. Sealing is IP68, dust tight and submersible, with a 2 metre drop rating. The housing is aluminium made from 75 percent recycled material and it operates from minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius. The emitter is a high power white LED at 6000 to 7500 K with CRI 70.
