Ledlenser P5 Flashlight: 200 lumens from a single AA cell, with no charger to remember
The Ledlenser P5 flashlight is not rechargeable, and that is the whole argument for it. Rechargeable torches are better in every respect right up until the moment you reach for one that has been sitting in a drawer, a glovebox or the bottom of a bag since the last time you thought about it. Then it is flat, and a flat torch is worse than no torch at all, because you were counting on it.
Why one AA cell is the point
An alkaline AA holds usable charge for years rather than months. It needs no cable, no habit and no memory of when you last topped it up. When it finally does run down, the replacement is available at any petrol station, supermarket or corner shop, at a price that makes the decision for you.
There is a second effect that only shows up over time. A lithium ion cell left sitting fully charged degrades whether it gets used or not, so a rechargeable torch untouched for three years is often past its best even after a fresh charge. A P5 with a new cell in it performs exactly as it did the day it was bought.
That makes this a torch you position rather than carry. One in the car, one in the kitchen drawer, one in the toolbox, one in the hiking pack. The value is not in any single unit being remarkable. It is in all of them working first time, every time, with no maintenance in between.
The Ledlenser P5 flashlight and its Advanced Focus System
The head slides forward and back with one hand. Pulled in, the beam is a wide flood for close work and moving around a space. Pushed out, it narrows to a spot reaching up to 170 metres. There is no wheel, no menu and nothing to learn, and it works in gloves or in complete darkness by feel alone.
Output
Power mode gives 200 lumens to 170 metres for about 2 hours. Mid Power runs 80 lumens to 100 metres for around 4 hours, and Low Power gives 20 lumens to 60 metres for roughly 8 hours. Two hundred lumens is not a searchlight and is not trying to be. It is comfortably more than enough to change a tyre, check a distribution board, walk a path or find whatever went under the couch, which is what a torch in a drawer is for.
Pocket carry
The P5 is 119 millimetres long with a 26 millimetre head and a 19 millimetre tube, and weighs 80 grams with the battery in it. An integrated clip means it rides in a pocket the way a pen does, and the end cap switch works under a thumb without changing grip.
Build
Three quarters of the aluminium in the housing is recycled stock. Sealing is IP54, which covers dust and splashes rather than immersion, and the body takes a 2 metre drop without complaint. Light comes from a high power white LED, cool at 6000 to 7500 K, rendering colour at CRI 70. It works anywhere between minus 20 and plus 40 degrees Celsius, and the first AA cell arrives in the box.
