Ledlenser P18R Flashlight: 6500 lumens, 600 metres, and an 86 millimetre head that explains both
The Ledlenser P18R flashlight has a head 86 millimetres across, roughly the diameter of a coffee mug and more than double that of an ordinary duty torch. That is not a styling decision. Aperture is what governs how far a beam travels, and this torch reaches 600 metres because of the size of that head rather than in spite of it.
Why head diameter sets the range
Focusing light into a narrow beam means capturing it and redirecting it forward. The larger the optic doing that work, the tighter the resulting column and the further it holds together before it spreads. A small head can produce a very bright beam but it cannot produce a genuinely narrow one, which is why compact torches with impressive lumen figures still run out of useful reach at two or three hundred metres.
Three high power LEDs sit behind that aperture, fed through Multi-Core Optics which blend their output into one even beam rather than three overlapping circles. One-Touch Focus shifts the whole thing from flood to spot in a single movement.

Boost produces 6500 lumens to 600 metres in short bursts. Power holds 3200 lumens to 425 metres for about 2 hours. Mid Power gives 1000 lumens to 240 metres for around 5.5 hours. Low Power runs 100 lumens to 45 metres for up to 45 hours. SOS, Strobe, Position and Blink sit alongside those, all selected on the Mode Select Ring.
Runtime at working output
Boost is a burst mode and is best treated as one. The setting that matters in real use is Power, holding 3200 lumens and 425 metres for around two hours, which is still a very great deal of light for a shift on foot. Dropping to Mid Power more than doubles the endurance and still reaches 240 metres.
Three batteries, all replaceable
Power comes from three 18650 Li-ion cells rated together at 3200 mAh and 11.1 V, charged in about 3.5 hours over USB-C using the supplied station. All three can be replaced, which on a torch of this class is a substantial point. Cells are the component that wears out first, and a 651 gram instrument is not something you want to discard on account of them.
Weight and what it is for
At 651 grams with cells fitted and 196 millimetres long, this is not an everyday carry torch and does not pretend to be. It is a vehicle, base or duty light: search and rescue, security covering large areas, farm and game work, industrial inspection at distance. The adjustable lanyard is included for exactly that reason.
The Mode Select Ring
Everything is chosen on a ring behind the head rather than by pressing a switch repeatedly. You select the mode first and the torch then does only that, which on a light capable of 6500 lumens is a safety feature as much as a convenience. Nobody wants to arrive at Boost by accident while looking at something two metres away. The ring turns easily with gloves on and carries a Transportation Lock position.
Protection
Sealing is IP68, dust tight and submersible, on a body made from 75 percent recycled aluminium. Drop rating is 1 metre, lower than the smaller torches in the range, which follows from mass rather than from build quality. A Temperature Control System handles the heat three LEDs generate, the output is flicker free, and battery and charge indicators with a low battery warning report the state of the pack before you set out.
