Ledlenser NEO5R Headlamp in Black and Grey: a 104 gram running headlamp with a beam built for the trail
Running at night is a different lighting problem from walking at night, and most headlamps are designed for walking. At running pace you need to read the ground under your feet and see what is coming several strides ahead, at the same time, without moving your head to switch between the two. A single beam struggles to do both. The NEO5R is built around exactly that requirement.
Two beams at once, which is what running needs
Two high power LEDs work together under Fusion Beam Technology. One casts a wide, even flood across the ground immediately in front of you, picking out roots, loose rock and camber. The other throws a focused spot further out, buying you time to react to a turn or an obstacle before you reach it.
Running both simultaneously is what makes the difference at speed. With a conventional focusable beam you are forced to choose: narrow it and you lose awareness of your footing, widen it and you lose your read of the trail ahead. Here you get both permanently, with nothing to adjust mid run.
Boost delivers 600 lumens out to 100 metres. Power runs 300 lumens to 70 metres for around 4 hours, Mid Power gives 100 lumens to 40 metres for around 8 hours, and Low Power sits at 20 lumens for roughly 35 hours. Colour temperature is 5200 to 6200 K at CRI 70.
Built to stay put at speed
The complete lamp weighs 104 grams with the battery, or 70 grams without. Where that weight sits matters more than the total. The battery pack mounts at the rear of the headband rather than the front, counterweighting the lamp so nothing pulls forward, and a cable tunnel system keeps the connection between them tidy.
The result is a lamp that does not bounce. Anyone who has run in a front heavy headlamp knows the particular irritation of a beam jogging up and down with every stride, and the constant small corrections needed to keep it aimed. Minimalist construction and rear weighting remove that. The head tilts through 45 degrees, so you set your beam angle once at the start and forget it.
A chest strap is supplied for anyone who prefers the light lower on the body, which throws longer shadows off obstacles and makes uneven ground easier to read.
Being seen as well as seeing
The headband is reflective and the rear battery pack carries an integrated red flashing light, giving visibility from behind and the sides as well as the front. On any route that shares space with vehicles, that matters as much as the forward beam.
Power and durability
An integrated 1800 mAh Li-ion battery rated 6.66 Wh charges fully in about 240 minutes through the Magnetic Charge System. A Transportation Lock stops the lamp switching on inside a kit bag, and Backup Mode keeps usable light available as the charge runs down. A front switch handles operation.
Construction is polycarbonate with a PMMA lens and a 41 mm head, rated IP54 against dust and water, drop tested to 2 metres and operating from -20°C to +40°C. This is the Black and Grey colourway; the Black and Blue version is mechanically identical.
