Most people choose a running headlamp on how well it lets them see. The question that matters just as much, particularly on roads, farm tracks and anywhere vehicles share your route, is how well it lets other people see you. The NEO5R answers both, and its safety design deserves attention before its output figures.
Visible from every direction
A red light sits on the rear battery pack with a flashing option, so a driver approaching from behind registers a moving person rather than nothing at all. The elastic headband is reflective along its length, catching headlights from the side. Combined with the forward beam, that produces genuine 360 degree visibility rather than a bright front and an invisible back.
For anyone running before sunrise or after dark on shared roads, this is the feature that counts most, and it is built into the lamp rather than something you clip on and forget.
Beam performance
Fusion Beam Technology runs two high power LEDs in combination. A wide, homogeneous flood covers the terrain close to your feet while a focused spot reaches further down the path, letting you judge footing and read what is ahead without adjusting anything.
Boost peaks at 600 lumens, reaching 100 metres. Step down and the lamp becomes an endurance tool: 300 lumens still carries 70 metres and lasts roughly 4 hours, 100 lumens brings 40 metres and about 8 hours, and the lowest setting of 20 lumens will run for as long as 35 hours. The LEDs are rated 5200 to 6200 K at CRI 70, and the head tilts across a 45 degree arc.
Weight, balance and wearing options
At 104 grams with the battery fitted, or 70 grams without, the NEO5R stays light enough to forget about over a long run. Putting the cell behind your head rather than above your eyes is what stops the assembly creeping forward as you sweat, since the two masses balance each other. A cable tunnel keeps the wire managed between them.
A chest strap comes included, giving you a second wearing position. Mounting the light lower throws it across the ground at a shallower angle, which lifts texture and makes rough surfaces easier to read. Some runners prefer it on technical trails and switch back to the head for road.
Charging and everyday practicality
The integrated 1800 mAh Li-ion battery holds 6.66 Wh and reaches full charge in roughly 240 minutes using the Magnetic Charge System, where the cable attaches by magnet with no port to open. A front switch handles operation, a Transportation Lock stops accidental activation in transit, and Backup Mode preserves usable output when the battery gets low.
Construction
Polycarbonate forms the housing, the lens is PMMA, and the head measures 41 mm across. The lamp carries an IP54 rating against dust and water, survives a 2 metre drop and works anywhere between -20°C and +40°C. This is the Black and Blue finish of the same lamp offered in Black and Grey.
