Anyone who has sat under a cheap camping lantern knows the problem. The light is technically bright but unpleasant to be near, harsh and blue tinted, throwing hard shadows and forcing you to look away from the source. The Ledlenser ML6 Warm Light takes the opposite approach. It is engineered around the quality of the light rather than the size of the number, and the difference is obvious the moment you switch it on at a table.
The ML6 runs at a warm white colour temperature of 2500 to 3000 K, closer to a candle or a domestic bulb than the cold blue white of a standard torch. It also achieves CRI 80 colour rendering, which means colours look like themselves under it. Food looks like food, a map's contour lines stay legible, and faces across a table look normal rather than drained.
Micro Prism Technology handles the distribution, spreading output evenly across the surrounding area instead of firing it out in a bright core with a dark ring around it. There are no hotspots to catch your eye and no glare to squint against, which is exactly what you want from a light you will sit beside for several hours rather than point at something for a few seconds.
Boost mode delivers 750 lumens for when you need to light up a whole campsite. Power holds 550 lumens for around 3.5 hours. At the other end, Low Power draws just 5 lumens and runs for up to 200 hours, which is more than a week of evenings from one charge and makes the ML6 a genuinely practical load shedding lamp.
Stepless dimming lets you set any level between those points rather than cycling through presets, so you can tune the lantern to a tent, a table or a whole braai area. Additional modes cover Blink, Pulse, SOS and Strobe, and a dedicated red light mode with its own adjustable brightness preserves night vision when you need to move around without resetting your eyes.
Power comes from a rechargeable 18650 Li-ion cell rated at 3200 mAh, recharging over USB in roughly five hours. Eighteen Power LEDs produce the output.
A lantern is only as useful as the places you can position it. The ML6 includes an integrated magnet for sticking to a vehicle panel, a tent pole bracket or a toolbox, a rubber hanging hook, and a removable stand with a flip out metal hook for hanging from a branch or a tent loop. Fluorescent locating elements glow softly in the dark so you can find the lantern after you have switched it off, which sounds trivial until you are searching a black tent for it.
The ML6 doubles as a power bank, charging compatible USB devices such as a phone from its own cell. Combined with the 200 hour low output, that turns it into a serious piece of emergency equipment rather than just a camping accessory. Battery and charge indicators, a low battery warning, a transportation lock and Ledlenser's Temperature Control System round out the practical side.
Construction is aluminium alloy across the top and tube, measuring 178 mm long and weighing 280 grams with the battery fitted or 230 grams without. The IP66 rating means it is dust tight and resistant to strong water jets, not merely splash proof, and it is drop tested from 1.5 metres with an operating range of -20°C to +40°C.
