The MH5 occupies a useful middle position in Ledlenser's outdoor range. It carries enough output at 400 lumens to handle proper trail work, yet it weighs 94 grams with the battery fitted, which is barely more than the entry level models. For trail runners, day hikers and anyone who notices weight on their forehead after a few hours, that ratio is the whole appeal.
Output and beam control
Maximum brightness is 400 lumens with a beam distance reaching 180 metres. Runtime stretches to 35 hours in Low Power at 20 lumens, dropping to around 4 hours at full Power.
The patented Advanced Focus System shifts the beam between a broad flood for close range work and a concentrated spot for distance. Rapid Focus makes that a one handed action, which is the difference between adjusting your beam mid stride and stopping to do it. On uneven ground at pace, being able to widen the beam for a technical section and narrow it again on open trail without breaking rhythm is genuinely useful.
Smart Light Technology and customisation
Smart Light Technology lets you configure how the lamp behaves rather than accepting a factory sequence. Modes can be tailored so the lamp starts where you want it and cycles in an order that matches how you actually use it. If you spend most of your time on low output and only occasionally need full power, you can set it up that way instead of pressing through brightness levels you never use.
The front switch is sized for operation with gloves on, and a red light mode is available for preserving night vision when you need to check a map, sort through a pack or move around a campsite without wrecking your dark adaptation.
Detachable head
The lamp head releases from the headband and works as a handheld torch, or clips onto clothing, a pack or gear. This is what makes a single lamp cover situations a fixed headlamp cannot: light aimed into an engine bay, clipped to a chest strap for a steadier beam while running, or simply handed to someone else while you keep working.
Charging and power options
The MH5 runs on a rechargeable 14500 Li-ion cell rated 3.7V and 750 mAh, replenished through the Magnetic Charge System where the cable attaches by magnet rather than plugging in. Over the life of the lamp that is a large number of disposable batteries not bought and not thrown away.
When charging is not an option, a standard AA alkaline battery fits the same compartment and the lamp keeps running. The lamp reports its own state throughout: charge progress while topping up, remaining capacity in use, and a warning before the power actually runs out.
Durability
Protection is rated IP54 against dust and splashing water, with 2 metre drop resistance and an operating range from -20°C to +40°C. That covers hiking, camping, outdoor sport and general everyday use in weather that turns without warning.
