Most headlamps are one thing. The MH3 is three, and it changes between them in about a second. The lamp head lifts straight off the headband, leaving you holding a compact torch that also carries an integrated metal clip, so it can go on a cap peak, a shirt pocket, a belt or a pack strap instead. For anyone who has ever needed light in a spot their forehead could not point at, that flexibility is the reason to choose this model over a fixed unit.
As a headlamp it does the standard job well: 92 grams including the battery, a washable headband, and a tiltable head so you can angle the beam down at your hands without dropping your chin. Detached, it becomes a pocketable torch for checking a wheel arch or reading a signboard. Clipped to clothing, it frees your head entirely, which is the setup most people end up preferring for camp chores and vehicle work.
Changing between these modes takes no tools and no fiddly catches, which is what makes the feature usable rather than a line on a box. Front button controls with Smart Light Technology keep operation to a simple press, so switching between the two white output levels, Low Power and Power, is straightforward with cold or gloved hands.
The MH3 puts out up to 200 lumens and reaches as far as 130 metres. More useful than either figure is how the beam behaves in between. Ledlenser's Advanced Focus System, in its Rapid Focus form here, shifts the beam from a wide flood to a concentrated spot with a quick one handed movement.
Flood is what you want within a few metres, spreading light across a tent floor, a cooking area or a tangle of gear. Spot compresses the same output into a column that picks out a trail marker or a reflective gate at distance. Being able to move between them instantly, without stopping or using both hands, is what makes a mid output headlamp feel more capable than its lumen count suggests.
The MH3 runs on one AA cell, included in the box, and delivers up to 35 hours in Low Power mode. On Power mode expect somewhere around 4 to 4.5 hours.
Choosing AA over a sealed rechargeable pack is a deliberate trade, and for a certain kind of trip it is clearly the right one. AA cells are stocked in every fuel station, corner shop and campsite kiosk in the country. They sit in a glovebox for years without losing much charge. They do not need a cable, a power bank or a working plug point to get you out of trouble. On a long walk, a remote camp or in an emergency kit, that availability beats the convenience of recharging.
If you would rather not buy disposables, the MH3 also accepts AA NiMH rechargeables and 14500 Li-ion cells, so you can run it as a rechargeable lamp day to day and still drop in an alkaline when you are far from a charger.
A transportation lock stops the lamp switching itself on inside a pack, which is the usual cause of a dead battery discovered at exactly the wrong moment. Protection is rated IP54 for dust and splashing water, drop resistance is 2 metres, and the operating range runs from -20°C to +40°C.
Hikers, campers, trail runners, mountaineers and anyone wanting a light, adaptable head torch that will not strand them when the power runs out will find the MH3 covers a lot of ground for its size.
