LEDLenser HF8R Core Headlamp, 1600 Lumens
Most headlamp frustration comes from one small event repeated fifty times in a night. You look down at your hands and the beam bounces off the work surface straight back into your eyes. You look up at the path and the same beam is suddenly too wide and too weak to show you anything past your boots. A manual headlamp makes you correct that yourself, twisting the head or clicking through modes with whatever fingers are still free. The LEDLenser HF8R Core takes the decision away from you and adjusts the beam on its own.
How the HF8R reads the situation
Two systems do the work. The digital advanced focus system controls the shape of the beam, and the adaptive light beam function decides how much light is needed and where. Lean into an engine bay and the beam pulls back into a soft, close flood with no hotspot to dazzle you. Lift your head towards a track and it tightens and reaches out to 210 metres. Nothing is pressed. The memory function then returns you to the last setting you chose deliberately, so the automation assists rather than overrules, and a manual dimmer remains available whenever you want to set a level and leave it there.
1600 lumens at one end, 90 hours at the other
Four light sources produce a maximum of 1600 lumens, which is genuinely bright for something worn on a head strap, and the same lamp runs up to 90 hours at its economical end. That spread is the real specification. It means one lamp covers a night of recovery work in a paddock and a week of reading in a tent. Colour temperature sits between 5200 and 6200 Kelvin with a CRI of 70, a slightly cool, neutral white that keeps colours honest enough to tell a red wire from a brown one at arm's length.
Heat, water and a two metre drop
High output makes heat, and heat is what kills LED brightness fifteen minutes into a job. The cooling technology and the temperature control system deal with that between them, managing output rather than letting the lamp cook itself and then dropping to a dim setting without warning. Sealing is rated IP68, which covers continuous immersion in water rather than a passing splash, so mist, driving rain and a dropped lamp in a puddle are all uneventful. The drop test height is 2 metres and the aluminium alloy body carries a working temperature range of -20 to 40 degrees Celsius. All of that comes in at 194 grams.
Charging, and the features that stop it dying mid task
The magnetic charge system is the part owners end up appreciating most. There is no port cover to lose, no plug to align in the dark and no seal degraded by grit, and a full charge takes 270 minutes. Backup mode holds a reserve so the lamp does not simply switch off at the worst moment, and an emergency light function is there when it does run out. The transportation lock stops the lamp waking up inside a bag and arriving at camp flat, which is a more common failure than any electrical one.
Red light and remote control
A red light mode is included, and it is worth using properly. Red preserves dark adapted vision, so you can check a map, a fuse box or a sleeping child and still see the ground when you look up. Full dimming is available across the range rather than three fixed steps. The lamp also connects to the LEDLenser Connect app, which allows remote control and setting changes from a phone. That is useful for anyone who mounts a lamp somewhere awkward, or who simply wants to configure it once and leave the buttons alone.
