LEDLenser H5R Core Headlamp
Most headlamps give you three brightness levels and expect you to be grateful. The LEDLenser H5R Core takes a different position: brightness is a dial, not a menu. Stepless dimming lets you set the exact amount of light the task needs, the memory function remembers where you left it, and the result is a headlamp that stops interrupting you. If you have ever cycled through five modes to find the one you had two seconds ago, you already understand why this matters.
Stepless dimming, and why fixed modes are annoying
Fixed output levels are a design shortcut. They exist because a simple driver circuit is cheap, not because 300 lumens or 15 lumens happen to be the right amount of light for anything in particular. Real tasks sit between the presets. Reading a manual under a bonnet needs less than you think. Fault finding in a roof space needs a bit more. Walking a dark path needs different light again.
Stepless dimming lets you hold the button and stop when the light looks right. Memory function then returns to that level next time you switch on, so the headlamp learns your habits rather than resetting itself to factory behaviour every session.
The H5R Core output range
Boost delivers 500 lumens with a beam reaching 200 metres, for short bursts when you need to see something far away. Power mode settles at 300 lumens over 150 metres for around 2 hours. Low power runs at 15 lumens over 30 metres and stretches to 50 hours.
Fifty hours is the figure to plan around. It is more than a week of evening dog walks, several nights of camping, or a long stint of close work in an unlit space. Very few people need 500 lumens for any length of time, and the H5R Core is built on that understanding.
Transportation lock
A small feature that saves entire trips. The transportation lock prevents the headlamp switching on inside a bag, which is how most people discover a flat battery at exactly the wrong moment. Lock it before it goes in the pack and it arrives with the charge you left it with.
Backup mode
When the battery approaches empty, backup mode keeps a low output available rather than letting the light simply die. Anyone who has been underground, in a roof, in a bush at night or halfway along a trail when a torch quit understands the value of a reserve. It is not much light, and it does not need to be. It needs to be enough to get you out.
Flicker free, and why your eyes care
Many LED lights dim by switching the emitter on and off very rapidly, which the eye reads as a continuous lower output. It works, but it causes eye strain over long periods, produces the strobing effect people see when filming, and can make rotating machinery appear stationary, which is a genuine hazard in a workshop. Flicker free operation avoids all three, which is why the feature appears on lights designed for people who wear them for hours at a time.
Heat, aluminium and honest engineering
The body is aluminium alloy, not plastic, and that is a thermal decision as much as a durability one. LEDs lose output and lifespan when they run hot, so the metal housing pulls heat away from the emitter. Cooling Technology and the Temperature Control System manage the rest, throttling output if conditions demand it rather than allowing the emitter to cook itself. At 167 grams the H5R Core is heavier than a plastic bodied light, and the aluminium is exactly where that weight went.
Focus, from flood to spot
The Advanced Focus System uses a lens rather than a plain reflector, so the beam adjusts from a wide even flood to a concentrated spot. Flood suits anything within arm's reach: an engine bay, a fuse board, a tent interior, a work surface. Spot is for identifying something at distance without walking to it. Being able to move between the two without swapping equipment is the practical reason people who own one of these stop carrying a separate torch.
Sealing and charging
Flex Sealing Technology and an IP67 rating cover dust ingress and temporary immersion in water, so rain, mud and a dropped headlamp in a puddle are non events. It is rated for a 1.5 metre drop and an operating range of -20 C to 40 C. The Magnetic Charge System snaps a charging contact into place instead of asking you to line up a plug in the dark, with a full charge taking 210 minutes.
A note on beam distance figures
Two hundred metres sounds like a searchlight and it is worth understanding what the measurement means. Beam distance describes the point at which the light has fallen to a very low level, roughly the brightness of a full moon. It tells you the reach of the beam, not the distance at which you can read a label. Treat published figures as a way to compare lights against each other rather than as a promise about what you will see, and the H5R Core will consistently outperform your expectations rather than disappoint them.
Who the H5R Core suits
People who use a headlamp regularly enough to be irritated by a bad interface. Mechanics, electricians, farmers, campers, cavers, night anglers and anybody doing repeated close work in the dark. Buy it for the dimming and the memory function rather than the lumen figure, because those are the features you will notice every single time you switch it on.
