LEDLenser EXH8R Headlamp
There is a specific moment in industrial maintenance that explains why the LEDLenser EXH8R exists. You are half inside an access hatch, both hands are occupied with a spanner and a component you cannot drop, and the torch is in your teeth. It is uncomfortable, it points at the wrong thing, and in a classified hazardous area the whole arrangement is a problem waiting to become an incident. A head mounted, safety rated light removes the compromise entirely.
Rated for gas zone 1 and dust zone 21
The specification lists EX gas zone 1 and EX dust zone 21. In plain terms, this is equipment intended for areas where an explosive atmosphere of gas, vapour or combustible dust is likely to occur during normal operation. Refineries, tank farms, chemical plants, paint shops, grain handling, milling, wood processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing all contain such areas, and every one of them has a hazardous area classification drawing that tells you exactly where the boundary sits.
Equipment carrying that rating is engineered so it cannot become the ignition source: no exposed sparking contacts, controlled surface temperature and a sealed construction. That is what you are paying for, and it is the reason a general purpose headlamp of similar output costs less and must not be taken past the sign on the door.
Two outputs, two very different jobs
On full power the EXH8R produces 200 lumens with a beam reaching 130 metres and runs for up to 10 hours. Drop to low power and it gives 45 lumens over 60 metres, and the runtime extends to 45 hours.
That lower setting deserves attention, because 45 hours is not a headline number, it is an operational one. It covers several shifts of close work without touching a charger, and close work is what most of a maintenance day actually consists of. Reserve the high setting for scanning a structure, checking a run of pipe or moving through unlit plant, and the battery will outlast your interest in being there.
The Advanced Focus System
LEDLenser builds its beams around a lens rather than a plain reflector, and the focus adjusts from a wide flood to a tight spot. On a headlamp that is more useful than it sounds. Flood is what you want at arm's length, spread evenly across a panel or a workspace so there is no hot spot burning out the detail you are looking at. Spot is what you want when you need to identify a valve label from the other side of a bay. Being able to move between them without changing equipment is the difference between one headlamp and two.
The rear light matters more than the front one
The EXH8R carries a rear light, and in an industrial setting that is a safety feature rather than a convenience. It makes the wearer visible from behind to vehicle operators, crane drivers, forklift traffic and colleagues in low light. A worker facing away from an approaching hazard is invisible without it, and every plant has at least one blind corner where that has nearly gone badly.
Choosing between a rated torch and a rated headlamp
Sites that already stock safety rated hand torches sometimes assume the job is done. It usually is not. A hand torch is right for walking a route, checking a level or a quick inspection where one hand is free. A headlamp is right for any task where both hands are on the work, which covers most maintenance, most fitting and every job performed inside, underneath or behind something. Most crews end up carrying both, and the headlamp becomes the one that never leaves the bag.
Sealing, drop rating and temperature
IP68 is the top of the ingress protection scale, covering dust ingress completely and sustained immersion in water. For plant that gets washed down, or work in driving rain on an outdoor installation, that is the rating you want rather than a splash resistant compromise. It is rated for a 1 metre drop and an operating range of -20 C to 40 C, which spans cold store work and hot plant rooms.
Weight, charging and expectations
At 342 grams this is a substantial headlamp, and it is worth being honest about that. It is not an ultralight trail running light and it never claimed to be. The mass reflects the battery capacity behind the 45 hour low power figure and the construction required for the safety rating. Charging takes 660 minutes, so treat it as an overnight or between shift routine rather than a top up during a tea break.
Colour and clarity
Colour temperature runs from 6000 to 8000 K with a CRI of 65. That is a cool, clinical light, which is deliberate for inspection work where contrast matters more than colour accuracy. Cracks, leaks, moisture and residue show up sharply against matt industrial surfaces under this kind of light.
Who the EXH8R is for
Anybody who works in a classified area and needs both hands. Maintenance crews, instrument technicians, tank inspectors, millers, grain handlers and contractors who move between sites and cannot rely on the client having the right equipment available.
