LEDLenser EX4 Flashlight
Most torch marketing is a lumen contest. The LEDLenser EX4 is not in that contest and would not want to be. It produces 50 lumens, which sounds modest until you understand what it is built for: environments where the wrong piece of equipment is not a mild inconvenience but the beginning of an incident report. The specification lists Ex dust zone 20, and that single line explains every design decision in the torch.
What a dust zone rating means
Combustible dust is one of the most underestimated industrial hazards there is. Flour, grain, sugar, wood, coal, aluminium and dozens of other everyday materials become explosive when finely divided and suspended in air, and all such an atmosphere needs is an ignition source. A spark from a switch contact, or a hot surface, will do it.
Equipment intended for those areas is engineered so it cannot supply that ignition source, and it is categorised by how continuously the hazardous atmosphere is present. The zone 20 classification given in the EX4 specification refers to the most demanding of the dust categories, the areas where a combustible dust cloud is present continuously or for long periods. Silos, mills, hoppers, filter housings and the inside of processing plant.
Why 50 lumens is the correct number
Output produces heat, and heat is one of the things safety rated equipment must control. A 50 lumen output with a 35 metre beam is calibrated to be genuinely useful for inspection work, reading a gauge, checking a seal, tracing a pipe run or finding your way along a walkway, without the thermal load of a high output emitter. It is also why the battery lasts: up to 7 hours of runtime from AAA cells.
Built from polycarbonate
The body material is PC, polycarbonate, and the torch weighs 65 grams at 140 mm long with a 20 mm head and body diameter. A non metallic body avoids the impact sparking risk that comes with hard metals struck against steel or concrete, and it keeps the whole unit light enough to carry all shift on a pocket or overall. The included fixation clip holds it where you put it.
Sealed to IP68
The EX4 carries an IP68 rating, the top of the ingress protection scale for both dust and water. In a working environment that means fine airborne dust cannot get into the housing and washdown will not kill it, which matters in food processing, milling and any plant that is hosed at the end of a shift. It is rated for a 1 metre drop and an operating range of -20 C to 40 C, covering cold stores at one end and hot plant rooms at the other.
Where the EX4 fits in a kit list
This is not the torch you take camping and it is not trying to be. It is the torch that lives in a locker at a plant, in a maintenance bag or clipped to the overalls of somebody who spends their day around classified areas. Sites that need it usually need several, because the whole point of safety rated equipment is that the correct item is present at the moment somebody reaches for a light, rather than sitting in a store two floors up while a general purpose torch gets used instead.
Beam quality
Colour temperature runs between 6000 and 7500 K, a cool white that reads as bright and clinical rather than warm, with a CRI of 70. For inspection work that cool, high contrast light helps you pick out cracks, leaks, moisture and residue against a matt surface.
Practical notes on the specification
A few figures are worth reading twice before ordering. Beam distance is quoted at 35 metres, which is an inspection and walkway range rather than a searchlight. Runtime of up to 7 hours is measured on fresh cells and describes a working shift. The 1 metre drop rating covers the realistic accident, a torch slipping off a handrail, rather than a fall down a silo. Read those numbers as the design brief they represent, and the torch will do exactly what it promises for years.
Non rechargeable, deliberately
The EX4 runs on AAA cells rather than a rechargeable pack. In a safety rated environment that is a feature rather than a compromise: no charging port to compromise the seal, no dock to find, and a torch that returns to full capability with a set of spares from the store cupboard rather than four hours on a charger.
Who needs one
Millers, grain handlers, food processors, maintenance teams, safety officers, inspectors and contractors working in classified areas. If your site has a hazardous area map on the wall, somebody has already had this conversation and the EX4 is the answer to it.
