Ledlenser AL10R Work Lantern: 6300 lumens of all round light from a 390 millimetre column
A floodlight points. That is the whole idea behind one, and it is why a floodlight leaves the area behind it dark and puts your own shadow across the work whenever you stand between the two. The AL10R work lantern is built the opposite way. It is a vertical column, 110 by 110 millimetres at the base and 390 millimetres tall, that throws 6300 lumens outward in every direction from wherever you set it down.
Why the shape matters
Stand a lantern in the middle of a space and the space is lit. Nobody is working in anybody else's shadow, the light does not need aiming and it does not need moving every time the work does. For a team stripping a room, servicing equipment from several sides at once, or working inside a tent, container or plant room, that is a fundamentally different result from a directional light aimed at one wall.
It also means you stop managing the light. There is no angle to get right and no repositioning halfway through a task, which sounds minor until you count how many times a day it happens with a floodlight.
Output and how long it lasts
Full power gives 6300 lumens and reaches about 60 metres, running for roughly an hour. The ladder steps down through 5100 lumens for 1.25 hours, 3600 lumens for 2 hours, 1800 lumens for 4 hours, and 750 lumens for up to 9.5 hours. As with most lights in this class, the top step is for short bursts and the middle is where the work gets done. At 1800 lumens you have a properly lit room for a four hour stretch, which covers most single sessions without touching a charger.
Power comes from an internal 4700 mAh 10.8 V pack rated at 50.76 Wh, charged over USB-C in about 6.5 hours.
Five levels, and why a lantern needs them
Brightness steps matter more on a lantern than on a floodlight, because a lantern lights the space you are standing in rather than a surface some distance away. Six thousand three hundred lumens inside a small room is uncomfortable to be near. The lower settings let you match the light to the size of the space, so the same unit works at full output standing in an open yard and at 750 lumens on a table inside a tent without blinding everyone sitting around it.

The same qualities that suit it to a work site make it one of the more sensible things to own for load shedding and unplanned outages. One unit lights a whole room without being aimed, it runs off its own battery for hours, and the supplied adapter means it recharges the moment the power returns and can run continuously from the wall in between. It is a work tool first, which is precisely why it holds up better than the emergency lights sold for the purpose.
Carrying and placing it
At 1397 grams with the battery, it is a one hand carry, and the narrow footprint means it takes up almost no floor space once it is down. The column shape stands on its own on any level surface, which is the normal way to use it, and the compact base fits into gaps a wide floodlight body will not go near.
Camping use follows the same reasoning. One lantern in the middle of a table lights the table and everyone at it, where a torch lights whatever it happens to be pointed at and leaves the rest of the group in the dark. The IP67 rating means it can stay outside overnight through rain without being packed away first.
Built to work site standards
The housing is aluminium alloy, rated IP67 for dust and water, drop tested to 1.5 metres and specified to operate from minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius. That is the same durability standard as the rest of the Ledlenser Work range, which means outdoor overnight use, wet conditions and the ordinary knocks of a site are all within what it is designed for rather than exceptions to it.
