The Cobra AM1055 two way radios are built for exactly that territory, keeping a group in contact when the network cannot, and doing it with a set of design choices aimed squarely at people who take their gear near water.
Most radios that go into a river do not come out working. The AM1055 is engineered to do both. The housing floats, so a unit knocked off a kayak or dropped off a jetty stays on the surface instead of disappearing into the silt. It also carries an IPX7 waterproof rating, meaning full submersion is survivable rather than fatal.
Cobra pairs that with a burp function, which clears water trapped in the speaker grille. Water sitting against a speaker cone muffles audio badly, and this feature expels it so the radio comes back to full volume rather than sounding drowned for the rest of the trip. For paddling, fishing, boating and anything else where a soaking is a matter of when rather than if, this combination is the whole argument for the AM1055.
Maximum performance range reaches up to 12 kilometres, giving plenty of headroom for keeping a walking group connected, coordinating between vehicles on a convoy, or staying in touch between a base camp and a party out exploring. As with all two way radios, that figure represents ideal open conditions, and terrain will shape real world results.
There are 16 channels and 121 privacy codes to work with, producing 1963 possible combinations. That volume of options is what keeps your conversation yours in a busy area, where other groups on common channels would otherwise be talking over you. The radio stores and scans up to 10 channels and channel or privacy code combinations, so switching between a family channel and a wider group channel takes a button press rather than a fresh setup.
Each unit weighs 45 grams, light enough that clipping one to a pack strap or belt is genuinely unnoticeable. The compact body and rubberised grip hold securely in wet or dusty hands, which is precisely when a smooth plastic radio tends to slip away from you.
A built in LED light handles the small tasks that come up after dark, and VibrAlert provides a silent vibrating notification for incoming transmissions. That last feature is more useful than it sounds. When you are stalking wildlife, sitting in a hide, or simply do not want a squawking radio announcing your position, a vibration lets you know someone is calling without broadcasting the fact.
The set arrives ready to use with rechargeable NiMH batteries, a micro USB cable and a two port charging dock that takes both radios at once. Belt clips are included. A single dock handling the pair is a small convenience that matters at the end of a long day, when the alternative is juggling two cables and remembering which unit still needs charge.
