TP-Link CPE510 5GHz 300Mbps 13dBi Outdoor CPE: Long-Range Wireless for Point-to-Point and Multi-Point Links
Running an Ethernet cable between two buildings 500 metres apart is expensive. Trenching fibre across a farm to reach an outbuilding is even worse. The TP-Link CPE510 eliminates the cable entirely by creating a dedicated 5 GHz wireless bridge capable of spanning distances of over 15 kilometres with system-level optimisations designed specifically for long-range outdoor transmission.
The unit houses a built-in 13dBi dual-polarised directional MIMO antenna with a focused beam width of 45° horizontal and 30° vertical. That tight radiation pattern concentrates the signal toward a specific target rather than scattering it in every direction, which is how the CPE510 maintains a usable link over distances that would overwhelm a standard router. Transmission power is adjustable from 0 to 23 dBm (200 mW) in 1 dBm increments, so you can tune the output precisely to your link distance and regulatory requirements.
Wireless speeds reach up to 300 Mbps on a 40 MHz channel, with selectable channel widths of 5, 10, 20, and 40 MHz. Narrower channels sacrifice raw throughput for greater noise immunity and range, which is a practical tradeoff when you're pushing a link across open farmland or connecting a gatehouse camera system several kilometres from the main network. The radio operates across the 5.15 to 5.85 GHz band using 802.11a/n standards, and supports Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) to automatically avoid interference on congested channels.
For installations serving multiple remote clients from a single base station, TP-Link's Pharos MAXtream TDMA technology allocates time slots to each connected device rather than letting them compete for airtime. This dramatically improves throughput consistency, total network capacity, and latency across point-to-multipoint deployments compared to standard polling methods.
The CPE510 operates in four modes: Access Point, Client, AP Router, and AP Client Router (WISP). That flexibility covers virtually every outdoor networking scenario, from a simple two-unit bridge between buildings to a WISP operator distributing internet access across a residential estate or game lodge. Multiple units across a site can be discovered, configured, and monitored centrally through the Pharos Control management application rather than logging into each one individually.
Outdoor durability is built into every layer. The enclosure uses ASA-stabilised plastic rated to IPX5 for waterproof certification, and the electronics carry 15 kV ESD protection and 6 kV lightning protection. The operating temperature range stretches from -40°C to 70°C, covering everything from freezing Highveld winters to blistering Lowveld summers. Processing is handled by a Qualcomm Atheros 560 MHz MIPS 74Kc CPU backed by 64 MB DDR2 RAM, giving the unit enough headroom to run its routing, firewall, and monitoring functions without bogging down under load.
Power delivery uses the included 24V passive PoE adaptor, which feeds both power and data over a single Ethernet cable for runs of up to 60 metres between the adaptor and the CPE. A remote reset button on the PoE adaptor lets you reboot the unit from ground level without climbing up to the mounting point. The adaptor accepts 100 to 240 VAC input at over 80% efficiency.
Built-in diagnostic tools include a spectrum analyser, speed test, signal strength and noise meters, throughput monitors, ping, and traceroute, all accessible through the web-based management interface over HTTP or HTTPS. SNMP v2c support allows integration with network monitoring platforms, and a ping watchdog automatically reboots the unit if it loses connectivity to a specified host, reducing the need for manual intervention on remote installations.
