Getting the mount right

Get diameter and rail type right and the rest follows. Get either wrong and no adjustment fixes it, which is why these are the two things to confirm before ordering anything.

Why angled mounts and MOA inserts exist

A scope has a finite range of elevation adjustment. At long distance you can run out of it before reaching your target, and the turret simply stops. A 20 or 40 MOA angled mount tilts the scope forward, giving back that adjustment range at the cost of some at the close end. Hawke's adjustable insert sets do the same job within standard rings. Neither is needed for general shooting, and fitting one when you do not need it wastes adjustment rather than gaining it.

Level the scope properly

A scope mounted with any cant introduces horizontal error that grows with distance, and it is invisible at short range. A levelling tool set removes the guesswork during mounting, which matters more than most people expect on anything past 100 metres. It is a one-off purchase that improves every rifle you own.

Common questions

One piece or two piece rings? One piece mounts hold alignment better and are the stronger choice on a Picatinny rail. Two piece rings are lighter and offer more flexibility in positioning for eye relief.

What does a riser do? It raises the optic, usually to clear iron sights or achieve a comfortable head position on a platform with a high comb.

M-LOK or KeyMod? Two competing handguard attachment systems. They are not interchangeable, so match the accessory to what your handguard has.

Do I need a rangefinder? Past a couple of hundred metres, yes. Holdover is meaningless without knowing the distance, and estimating range by eye is unreliable.
