The D in 2D and 3D refers to the number of D cell batteries. More cells means more runtime and more output, and also a noticeably longer torch.

Why buy a D cell torch in 2026

Two honest reasons. Runtime, because D cells hold considerably more energy than the small cells in a compact light, so a Maglite runs for a very long time on a set. And availability, because D cells can be bought anywhere, which matters for a torch kept in a vehicle or an emergency kit for years at a time. A rechargeable light left in a drawer for two years is flat. A Maglite with fresh D cells is not.

The MagCharger kit

The ML150LR is the rechargeable option, supplied with both 230V mains and 12V vehicle charging. That combination is what makes it a fixture in vehicles and workshops, since it lives on charge and is always ready. It also produces the highest output in this range.

Common questions

Are these still incandescent? No. The ML300L and ML150LR are LED, which gives considerably more output and far better runtime than the older bulb versions.

Can I focus the beam? Yes. Maglite torches adjust from spot to flood by twisting the head, which has been a feature of the design throughout.

Why are they heavy? Machined aluminium body. That is the durability everyone associates with the brand, and it is a deliberate trade-off rather than an oversight.

Which for a vehicle? The MagCharger, since the 12V charging keeps it ready. For a kit that sits untouched, a D cell model with spare batteries is the more reliable choice.
