EZVIZ is the consumer end of the Hikvision group, and the design brief is different from traditional CCTV. These are cameras a homeowner installs themselves, running to an app rather than a recorder, with the battery and solar models needing no cabling at all. That makes the range particularly well suited to South African conditions, where power is unreliable and drilling through a wall for a cable run is often the obstacle. NeonSales carries 47 EZVIZ products, from R465 for an H1C indoor camera up to R3,630 for an EB8 4G camera with solar panel.
Both come from the same group, and they solve different problems. EZVIZ is self-installed, app-driven and standalone, which suits a home or a single trouble spot. Hikvision is the installer-fitted, recorder-based system that scales to many cameras and integrates with armed response. If you want four cameras on a house recording continuously to an NVR, that is a Hikvision job. If you want to watch a gate, a driveway or a back door from your phone, EZVIZ is the simpler and cheaper answer.
A solar battery camera is genuinely convenient, though performance depends on panel placement more than anything printed on the box. Mount the panel where it gets direct sun for most of the day and keep it clear of dust. Winter output drops, and a camera triggering constantly will drain faster than one watching a quiet side passage. On a busy driveway, budget for occasional manual recharging rather than assuming it will run untouched forever.
Do I need the NVR? Not necessarily. Most EZVIZ cameras record to a microSD card or to cloud storage, and many households never add a recorder. The X5S wireless NVR makes sense once you have several cameras and want continuous recording in one place.
What does the 4G version cost to run? It needs a data SIM, and that is an ongoing cost. Worth it where there is no WiFi, unnecessary where there is.
What is the dual lens H9C for? It combines two 5MP sensors, typically a wide view and a zoom or a second angle, so one unit covers what would otherwise need two cameras.
Will these work during loadshedding? Battery and solar models keep running. Mains models stop when the power does, and also lose connection when the router goes down, so pair them with a mini UPS on the router if that matters.
