What a rear bag actually does

At long range, the rear of the rifle needs support just as much as the front. A bipod holds the fore-end steady, and the rear bag controls elevation and lets you make fine adjustments by squeezing rather than by moving the rifle. Without one, the shooter's hand becomes the only rear support, and hand tremor translates directly into vertical dispersion on target.

The ELR designation refers to extreme long range, where these effects compound with distance. A bag of this type is a standard part of a precision setup rather than an optional extra, and it is one of the cheapest ways to remove a real source of error.

Common questions

Do I need one for hunting? Less so at typical hunting distances, where a bipod and a steady position are usually enough. For target shooting past a few hundred metres, it makes a measurable difference.

How is it used? Placed under the buttstock, with the support hand squeezing to raise or lower the point of aim. That is what allows small elevation corrections without disturbing the rifle.
