Sharpening and honing are different jobs

This is worth understanding before buying. A pull-through sharpener removes metal to create a new edge, and doing it too often shortens the life of a good knife. A sharpening steel removes almost nothing and simply straightens an edge that has rolled over with use. The right routine is to use the steel regularly and the sharpener only when the steel stops bringing the edge back.

Which knife for which stage

The hunting knives here are shaped for specific tasks rather than being general blades. A gut hook opens without cutting into what is underneath. A caping knife is small and precise for working around the head and cape. A skinning knife has a curved belly for separating hide. A butcher knife handles the larger cuts afterwards. Common questions

Do the carbide blades wear out? Yes, and they are replaceable rather than the sharpener being disposable. Standard and serrated replacement blades are both stocked.

Will a pull-through damage an expensive knife? It removes more metal than a stone and gives less control over the angle. On a good knife used regularly, a stone or a guided system is kinder. On a working knife you need sharp now, the AccuSharp is the practical answer.

Can it sharpen serrated edges? Only the dedicated serrated model. A standard pull-through will flatten serrations rather than sharpen them.

Is the bone saw necessary? For field processing of larger game, yes. A knife will not do that work, and attempting it damages the blade.
