NeonSales stocks a wide range of blowback gas pistols for beginners and advanced users. When you’re choosing a blowback gas pistol for gas gun self defense, pay attention to the kick/recoil, the balance, how it sits in your hand, and whether it runs consistently.
In a blowback system, gas propels the BB or pellet and cycles the slide or bolt to mimic recoil. This adds realism that’s useful for training and confidence under pressure.
Put on eye/face protection every session. Laws differ by area, confirm the current rules before you train or travel.
New to the hobby? Start with simple controls and mags that seat cleanly every time. Advanced users can explore higher-FPS, accuracy-focused models for defence practice and sport shooting.
Check out our Pellets collection for more information on what blowback gas pistols use as ammunition.
For most blowback pistols, 5 to 10 metres is the sweet spot; accuracy falls off gradually beyond it.
Gas pressure falls in cold weather and rises in heat. CO₂ handles cold better; green gas can feel sluggish in winter. Don’t heat magazines, keep them at room temp and out of direct sun.
Dry O-rings/valves. Use a drop or two of silicone oil on seals and valves. Avoid petroleum oils. Store magazines with a slight gas charge to keep the seals seated.
Wipe the barrel, keep slide rails lightly lubricated, and add a drop of silicone oil to magazine valves/seals. Follow the model’s manual for field-strip steps.
Load only the calibre your pistol is marked for: 6 mm BBs, 4.5 mm (.177) pellets, or 5.5 mm (.22) pellets.
Louder than non-blowback due to the cycling slide, but still “backyard range” levels for most models. Eye protection is mandatory; hearing protection is a good idea indoors.
Fit is model-specific. Many use a 20 mm Picatinny rail for lights; holsters can be either model-molded or universal, verify rail size and frame profile before you buy accessories.
Work on draw, presentation, trigger control, and reloads in a controlled environment with proper backstops and eye/face protection. Avoid public spaces; follow local rules.
Keep it unloaded in a case, with mags removed. Vent gas if the maker advises, or store with a minimal charge to protect seals. Always comply with local transport requirements.
Common causes: under-gassed mag, cold mag, dry rails, worn or dirty magazine lips. Warm/charge the mag, clean/lube rails, and inspect feed lips and seals.
