UMAREX HDR50 COMBO

This is the HDR50 T4E, a superb engineering feat by UMAREX, to come up w/ something cost effective, available over the counter for the everyday people like me and you, yet also, unlike the usual 4.5mm gas guns, this revolver sports a .50 calibre (12.7mm), about 2.8x greater in calibre size, which equates to weighter rounds (the mainstay of polymer solids this gun uses, are 24gr, compared to the 5.4gr nickel-clad steel shot that your typical CO2 smoothbore pistol uses).

In terms of running costs, one could perhaps assume that CO2 pistols are cheaper to shoot with, and to an extent, this is the case - 1500 steel BBs will set you back about R120, whereas 100 solids that this revolver uses, will set you back R100. a Marked difference, also considering that, this revolver uses more gas - its economy is 18 usable shots per CO2 capsule on factory power setting, whereas a GLOCK 19 non blowback can allow you up to 90 shots. a Big difference, however, the former does not feature this revolver's stopping power / the ability to put an attacker down. This product has been so aptly named by the manufacturer with good reason...

Quick Product Rundown / Key Features

  • Up to 11 Joules of energy output - will discharge 24gr .50 caliber shot/slugs at an average of 385 FPS, up to about 450 FPS.
  • Lightweight - weighs in just 725 grams
  • 6 Shot magazine fed. Accepts a variety of different rounds;
    • .50 cal PVC NYLON shot
    • .50 cal OC Pepper-filled frangible shot
    • .50 cal harder shell paintball
    • .50 cal self-rifling steel-tipped slugs
    • .50 cal chalk-filled frangible shot
    • .50 cal home-made hot glue slugs
  • Has a BUMP-READY cap. When ready to fire the gun, you just bump the cap at the base of the handle. No need to keep the gun pressurized, which will cause the gun to leak. Just make sure a CO2 capsule is pre-loaded. One CO2 capsule should be able to yield 18 usable shots.
  • Double blade trigger safety, like on a GLOCK. No need to worry w/ a conventional safety.
  • 4.2" Smoothbore barrel
  • Highly customizable and easy to maintain. a Real "people's" gun

This revolver is reminiscent to some of the new .44 MAGNUM lineups that TAURUS have been bringing out in recent years, but with a massive compensator under the barrel. Its whole of the body is injection moulded polymer, which lends to this revolver's low price tag, also ensuring lower weight and durability of its colour and likewise, resistance to colour removal, for example, if you bump the revolver, then the finish won't come off the way anodizing comes off of aluminium.

This revolver weighs in at 724 grams, making it really wieldy and woman-friendly as well, despite its large and imposing "big iron" appearance. The handle is nice and full sized, featuring three slopes that would correspond w/ your little, ring and middle finger respectively. There are vertical stippled panels on the sides of the handle, also a horizontal stippled panel at the nape of the handle. This does improve grip traction.

You have your cylinder moulded in to lend added realism to this gun, at whore fore, the removable rotary magazine slides in. In front of this, we have a spring-loaded lever w/ catch that, can be used to retract / engage the axial pin which aforementioned magazine rotates upon. The magazine likewise is a 6 shot type, in .50 calibre w/ removable alloy ratchet core. The rear of the loading holes for this magazine is chamfered to allow easier loading - we also recommend loading up the magazine from behind, not the fore, as it is trickier and because the magazine is polymer, the holes can end up boarding out faster with repeat use this way, due to increased friction. Not that it is a real problem, but if you like keeping your equipment in its original condition for as long as possible, we recommend the above.

You may have wondered what that decagram shaped oblong tip at the base of the handle is and why it juts out the way it does, moreover, the reason for the hi-vis corona sticker on it saying "PUSH" in opposite orientations. This is referred to as the "bump cap assembly" and is aluminum.

This revolver uses 1x 12g CO2 capsule, which is inserted upside-down into the handle (w/ the nozzle pointed downward), whereafter the bump cap is threaded back up. At this time, this revolver is not charged / pressurized, and likewise, will not shoot / discharge pressure when the trigger is pulled.

Otherwise, the gun itself doesn't feed out of the CO2 capsule directly, but from the larger pressure chamber which the capsule bleeds out into, so a larger flow of gas is possible, for the weightier .50 cal projectile, compared to how this works on a 4.5mm CO2 pistol.

At what distance is this revolver effective?
At 20 meters, you can expect to get a six shot grouping into a 1.5kg RICOFFEE tin on average w/ the 24gr PVC Nylon shot. Accurate enough to hit a stationary target centre mass. At that distance, the shot will readily penetrate that same empty coffee tin. On human tissue, it will leave a painful .50 calibre crater penetrating the first few dermal layers. As the distance to the target closes, so does the grouping and likewise, the damage skyrockets. However, so does the threat level, if facing an attacker armed w/ a melee weapon.

Is this revolver EDC-friendly? It really looks chunky.
Yes, though not much waistband carry. We recommend a four-point chest carry w/ webbing straps kept tight. You can keep it under your car seat, in the glove box, maybe under the steering rack if you wanted to. The problem with waistband carry, is that the bump cap might be vulnerable to getting knocked / bumped unintentionally. However, alot of people do IWB carry this w/out issue. We just don't really recommend underarm carry if you haven't previously done so.

You mentioned the power upgrade.. Please elaborate and what is its impact warranty on this product?
No permanent modifications are made to the gun - only a flow-inhibitor is removed and we supply it with for you in the box, in case you want to de-tune your marker later.

Otherwise, the power upgrade boosts the average power output from 11 Joules, to 16 Joules. There is a further boost to 24 Joules possible, however, we have not performed it, but increasing the diameter of the hole where the gas goes up into the receiver, might play a role. If you intend on doing this, please work very carefully and remove micrometers at a time, not whole millimeters.

Otherwise, the 16J upgrade, also known as the free-flow upgrade, will increase the muzzle audio report quite considerably, likewise so with the actual projectile velocity.

Those self rifling slugs do look really nice, but what benefit do they confer over what the staple plastic ball shot offer?
For starters - accuracy. Instead of rifling the barrel to shoot through bullet shaped projectiles like an an air rifle, it makes more sense to, like on a shotgun, have the slugs twist in the air themselves, which decreases flight inertia, increases range, increases accuracy and likewise, the front end will drill into what it is shot against.

Can the HDR50 16J kill someone?
Probably, the risk of lethality with this gun is a bit high. You as the end-user assume full responsibility for whatever leaves your barrel, wherever it goes and wherever it stops. The plastic solid shot should be fine at 10 meters, although, at 3 meters and under, the round will penetrate quite a bit.
